You fill up every week, watch the numbers climb, and drive away wondering where it all went. You tell yourself gas is just expensive and there's nothing you can do about it. In the winter of 1973, I was 18 years old, pumping gas at a Sunoco outside Toledo while the lines wrapped around the block. The man who owned that station taught his customers how to stretch every gallon, and their tanks lasted longer than anybody's. I'm Frank Decker, a retired mechanic with 38 years in the business, 15 of them inside dealership service departments, and today I'll show you what Walt taught me, plus the one thing he got wrong.
In this video:
• The sensor that quietly lies to your engine, and how to clean it for $10 instead of replacing it for $340
• How to check your oxygen sensor with a $25 scanner before anyone sells you a new one
• Why the air filter matters far less for your mileage on a modern car than it did in 1973
• Tire pressure the right way, when the free air pump at the gas station doesn't exist
• The hand test that finds a dragging brake eating your fuel every mile
• The service counter fuel cleaning that isn't in your owner's manual
• Why premium gas buys you nothing if your manual says regular
• What cold weather, short trips, and remote starters do to your tank
• The gas pump myths that still won't die
• Speed, acceleration, and where the biggest savings actually live
• The 1973 habit that is exactly backwards on every modern car
• Where "half" really comes from, and whether it applies to you
No miracle bottles, no products to sell you. Just what an honest mechanic knows and nobody at the pump or the service counter has any reason to tell you. On a well kept car driven gently, this might be 10 or 15 percent. On a car that's been let go and driven hard, fixing the car and the driving together can get you close to half.
Tell me in the comments your year, make, and model, what mileage you're getting right now, and whether you were one of the neutral coasters back in '73. I'll tell you where I think your fuel is going. I read every one.
