Direct Compensation for Property Damage (or DCPD) is an important element of car insurance policies in many Canadian provinces, including Ontario. It covers repairs to the insured vehicles under certain circumstances, most notably when the driver is not at fault for an accident. DCPD contrasts with collision coverage, which covers damage to the car when the driver is at fault.
Under DCPD, you’ll deal with your own insurance provider throughout the claim, even though another driver is at fault. DCPD also includes loss of use coverage, meaning it will help you pay for alternative transportation (like a rental car) while your car undergoes covered repairs.
If fault is shared between multiple drivers, DCPD will only cover the portion for which the insured was at fault. For example, if you were 50% at fault for an accident, DCPD would only cover 50% of the repairs; you would need collision coverage for the remaining half.
DCPD is mandatory in some provinces, but optional in Ontario and Alberta. If a vehicle owner opts out of DCPD, they will be entirely responsible for covering repair costs resulting from accidents, even if someone else is at fault.
