In 1982, a construction crew near Titusville, Florida uncovered a human skull beneath a shallow pond. The remains weren’t decades old. They were nearly 8,000 years old.
What archaeologists found next turned Windover into one of the most unusual archaeological sites in North America.
More than 160 people had been buried there across generations. Inside the peat survived traces that normally disappear almost completely: preserved brain tissue, ancient textiles, wooden objects, food remains, tools and evidence of everyday life thousands of years before many of America’s best-known archaeological sites.
But Windover still holds another mystery.
Only part of the site was excavated.
In this episode of UNWIND THE UNKNOWN, we follow what scientists actually discovered, what the famous “preserved brains” really were, what the site reveals about Archaic Florida — and why archaeologists deliberately left part of Windover untouched.
Sometimes the most important discovery is the one researchers decide not to dig up.
Stay curious. Follow the evidence. Unwind the unknown.
