Is the "cortisol belly" real? And what about the "cortisol face"? Social media blames this one hormone for almost everything. But cortisol started as a miracle drug, and the real story is more surprising than the trend.
This video follows cortisol from the first cortisone injection in 1948 to the Nobel Prize, shows what the hormone actually does in your body, where the real "moon face" comes from, and what studies on belly fat can and cannot prove. At the end, it sorts the claims into solid, likely, still open and not supported.

A NOTE ON THE NUMBERS
The figure of roughly 2 to 8 new cases per million people per year refers to Cushing's syndrome caused by the body's own cortisol overproduction (JAMA review, 2023). Older European population studies report lower rates (0.7 to 2.4 per million per year), so the range is an estimate, not an exact number.
The Yale study (2000) tested women in a lab and measured cortisol after stressful tasks. It shows a link with body shape, not which came first. The UCL study (2017) measured cortisol in the hair of 2,527 people aged 54 to 87 and found a link with waist size and body mass index, but the researchers say it is not known whether high cortisol causes obesity or results from it.
The statement that everyday stress does not cause a true moon face rests on doctors interviewed by Healthline and TODAY, not on a single study. Details about the Merck synthesis (nearly forty steps, a first batch of 18 milligrams) come from a biographical memoir of the chemist Lewis Sarett and a 1992 history article, which counts 37 steps.
