Most Romans had no kitchen. No chimney, no running water four floors up, and cooking a real meal in an apartment block could burn the whole building down. So how did a million people eat? And how did they know what time it was, in a city where the length of an hour changed with the season? This is one ordinary Roman day — not a senator's.
