Experiencing a smell that is not actually present is sometimes described as a phantom smell or phantosmia. It may also be referred to as an olfactory hallucination. Although these symptoms can sometimes be discussed in psychiatry, phantom smells are not automatically caused by a psychiatric disorder. In this video, we discuss possible reasons why a teenager may repeatedly experience unusual smells such as burning rubber, smoke, chemicals, or other unpleasant odors. Possible causes that doctors may consider include problems involving the nose or sinuses, migraines, certain medications, neurological conditions, seizures, changes in smell perception, and—in some cases—mental health conditions. When symptoms repeatedly occur in a child or teenager, proper medical evaluation is important.
