One of the twelve historic conservation areas of central Shanghai, the 129-hectare block is where writers Lu Xun and Mao Dun once lived. The route runs from Sichuan Road North via Changchun Road and Changshan Road into Shanyin Road, built in 1911 as Scott Road and still lined with plane trees, then on to Tian'ai Road and Lu Xun Park. What survives is the everyday fabric of 1920s-40s Shanghai — shikumen lane houses, terraced garden villas, neighbourhood barbers and noodle shops — with the World Writers Square and its ten statues at the far end.
