⁴ᴷ Iwate: Kitakami Station (岩手県: 北上駅) - Japan Walking Tour (October, 2026)

September was dominated by relentless rain, making headlines in Tokyo with over 35 consecutive days of precipitation. After more than a two-month hiatus, I finally set out on a new journey north through the Tohoku region. My ultimate destination for this trip is the Tsugaru region in Aomori Prefecture. Back in high school, I was captivated by Osamu Dazai’s novel Tsugaru during a class. While I rarely read his other works, re-reading this travel essay after all these years rekindled my desire to explore the landscapes he depicted. Pushing northward through Tohoku, I took advantage of the weekend to travel all the way from Iwaki City in Fukushima Prefecture to Kitakami City in Iwate Prefecture. Kitakami Station serves as a key transit hub connecting the Tohoku Shinkansen with conventional lines—the Tohoku Main Line and the Kitakami Line heading toward Akita. The station building itself is surprisingly spacious and imposing. However, with a combined daily ridership of only around 6,000 passengers across both Shinkansen and local lines, the station felt remarkably quiet compared to its physical scale. The surrounding station plaza features a cluster of business hotels and local eateries, but being a Sunday night, pedestrian traffic was sparse.
