THE HISTORY OF THE MEDIEVAL CHURCH AND THE HERESIES THE ARIANS AND OTHER STORIES by Federico E. Perozziello The fourth century AD marked the beginning of Christianity's establishment as the state religion of the Roman Empire. At the same time, starting with the Ecumenical Council of Arles in 314 AD, the process of control and repression of the various Christological heresies that manifested themselves throughout the vast territory of the Empire began. The Christological Question would animate the Council of Nicaea in 325, the First Council of Constantinople in 381, and the subsequent First Ecumenical Council of Ephesus in 431. The heresies of Arius, Pelagius, and Nestorius would be the protagonists of this debate.
