Hon. Winnie Odinga's full speech at the induction of the Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga into the Kenya Publishers Association Hall of Fame, Nairobi International Book Fair, Sarit Expo Centre, 24 September 2026. In the 1980s, they jailed him for what he believed. He could have let it end there. Instead, years later, he sat down and wrote it all out — nearly a thousand pages of a childhood in Maseno, of detention, of a country learning to be free. He called it The Flame of Freedom. This week, Kenya's publishers honoured him for it. Not for a speech. Not for a rally. For a book. I was there to receive what he never got to hold, and spoke to a room that included young readers and students — children who will never meet him, but who will read his words, argue with his ideas, and grow up in the country he spent his life fighting for. The theme of this year's fair was Read. Think. Lead. About the honour The Kenya Publishers Association inducts figures who have shaped Kenya's literary and intellectual life into its Hall of Fame. The induction took place at the Nairobi International Book Fair. The book Raila Odinga: The Flame of Freedom (2013), written with Sarah Elderkin, with a foreword by Olusegun Obasanjo.
