Guanyin depicted holding a lotus flower is known as Padmapāṇi, meaning “Lotus-Bearing Bodhisattva,” or Lotus-Holding Guanyin. In Chinese Buddhism, beginning in the Tang Dynasty, White-Robed Guanyin, regarded as the mother aspect of the Lotus Family, became an important principal form of Avalokiteśvara worship. In popular religious tradition, Guanyin is also respectfully known as Guanyin Buddha, Guanyin the Great Being, Guanyin Niangniang, or Guanyin Mother. In Esoteric Buddhism, Guanyin is associated with the Lotus Family. In Pure Land Buddhism, Guanyin is one of the great bodhisattvas of the Western Pure Land. Together with Mahāsthāmaprāpta Bodhisattva, Guanyin serves as one of the two attendants beside Amitābha Buddha, forming the Western Pure Land Trinity.
