Sleep is important for you, no matter what. Especially after your body has undergone something like hair transplant surgery. Some people do have strange ways of sleeping after this surgery. This can considerably affect the grafted area and spoil the dressing, which is why it is so crucial to sleep the right way. Doctors do not bandage the scalp since it blocks the venous and lymphatic drainage of the scalp. This is what makes sleeping after your hair transplant surgery tricky. This means that your posture is the first step you have to figure out. But before we move to that, remember to ensure your bed sheets and covers are extremely clean. If you have long hair, try pushing it to a side and put a cloth underneath it to prevent it from getting tangled. Do not drink alcohol and smoke tobacco to help you sleep. And if the swelling which slowly arises on the 3rd or 4th day gets in the way of your rest, simply ice it. These are basic prerequisites to a good night’s rest. Now comes the posture. For the next three to four nights, you have to fix your sleeping times and follow appropriate postures. To sleep, lie on your sides to be precautious. Put cushions all around you to ensure you do not bang your head against the headboard. This will also help you by avoiding swelling of your eyes, forehead and even your cheeks. Arranging these pillows in an upright position, or using an airport pillow, will also help protect your hair follicles and grafts from harmful friction. They will also help your head from swelling up, due to your head being at an elevated position, over all those pillows. For the first week or so, do not sleep on your back. If you want, sleeping in an inclined-upright position may help too but it is not necessary and you can not do it for too long, and it is not a necessary requirement. If you are comfortable, you can even sleep on a recliner sofa. But make sure that this is clean and comfortable. A week later, the grafts are anchored in and it will be safe for you to sleep on your back. Make sure you get an okay from your dermatologist before you opt for sleeping on your back. He is in the best position to ensure that the grafts are anchored in, well and good. After a week or so, when your dermatologist is confident about the grafts being well set into your scalp, you can begin to sleep normally. It takes about 2 weeks until you can fully sleep normally. It is all a matter of time. Once you get used to it and your body gets comfortable with the fact that your scalp is sensitive, falling asleep gets easier. More importantly, your subconscious registers the fact that your scalp needs extra care and keeps your body cautious when you sleep. Do not fret about this and trust your body to handle it, even when you consciously are not. Sleeping with someone in the house, or in the room, whom you trust helps. They can check on you and help you when you do not want to get out of bed. Always visit your dermatologist for regular check-ups and updates about after-care treatment methods which depend at what point of the timeline you are on.
