On the fourteenth of October 1066, King Harold II and Duke William of Normandy met on a ridge in Sussex. By nightfall the English king was dead and the Norman conquest of England had begun. This documentary follows the year of three kings: Edward the Confessor's death, the Norwegian invasion and Harold's victory at Stamford Bridge, then William's landing at Pevensey and the long day of fighting at Hastings.
We also look at the debates historians are still having. Did Harold really force-march his army two hundred miles, or did he move it by sea? Were the Norman feigned retreats a real tactic, or a cover story for a near rout? And did Harold actually die from an arrow in the eye, or was the most famous image on the Bayeux Tapestry reshaped by later restorers?
Finally, we follow what happened next: William's coronation on Christmas Day, castles, the Domesday Book, a new ruling class, and changes to the English language that you can still hear today.
