In 1963, a Turkish man swinging a sledgehammer in his basement broke through a wall—and fell into an entire city hidden 85 metres beneath his home. This is Derinkuyu: the deepest underground city ever discovered, an 18-level labyrinth carved by hand into solid rock, large enough to hide 20,000 people, their livestock, food and water for months without ever seeing the sun.
