JAPAN HIT by SUPER TYPHOON CHAMPI — 134 MPH Winds & 36-FOOT WAVES Closing In
Power cuts are affecting more than 9,000 homes in Cornwall and Devon as Storm Austen hits parts of the UK.
A red warning, the most serious level of alert issued by the Met Office, is in place for Guernsey and Jersey. Amber warnings have been given to Cornwall and parts of Devon for strong winds.
A further yellow weather warning for wind also begins for millions across the South East and North West of England, the East Midlands and Wales.
Super Typhoon Champi is closing in on Japan’s southwestern Okinawa islands on Friday, October 23, 2026, bringing the threat of destructive winds, towering waves, extreme rainfall and coastal flooding. Officials on Ishigaki have warned that some houses could collapse as residents and stranded tourists prepare for the storm’s arrival.
The Sakishima Islands, including Ishigaki and Miyako, face forecast wind gusts of up to 123 mph, waves reaching 36 feet and as much as 12 inches of rain in a day. Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways have canceled numerous flights, while ferry services have been suspended, leaving some islands temporarily cut off. Visitors are being urged to shelter safely, stock up on essential supplies and stay away from beaches and river mouths.
In this video, we track Champi’s approach, examine the risks facing Okinawa’s remote islands, explain the widespread travel disruption and outline the storm’s projected path toward Kyushu and potentially Honshu. Although Champi is expected to become an extratropical cyclone as it moves northeast, its remnants could still bring heavy rain to parts of Japan, including areas near Tokyo.
