Everyone Gets SAURON Wrong (Rings of Power Season 3 Explained)

#RingsOfPower #Sauron #LordOfTheRings In the new season three trailer, Sauron finally has armour, a spiked crown and a face, and honestly, a lot of movie fans can't stand the face. Everybody knows Sauron is a giant flaming eye. The thing is, Tolkien never made him one, and I think the eye is only the first thing most of us get wrong about him. I start with where the eye comes from. In the movies it's one line from Saruman, a spirit waiting for a body, and what's funny is that the book says the opposite: at the Council of Elrond, Gandalf tells everyone the Enemy is taking shape again. In other words, in the book the Eye is something Frodo feels on Amon Hen and names himself. Then there's the part most people forget, the extras of the extended Return of the King, where Peter Jackson admits the eye was a problem and explains the cut fight between Aragorn and Sauron. Then the hand. Isildur cuts the Ring from a hand with fingers, which means there was a body to cut it from. His own scroll remembers it as black and yet burning like fire, and Gollum, for instance, says He has only four on the Black Hand. In a letter Tolkien describes the form he took, more than human but not a giant. Next is the beautiful face: Númenor, the new body he wrought after it, and how the show walks him through almost every shape, from Jack Lowden in the season two opening to Halbrand, Annatar and the face in the trailer, which Charlie Vickers explained at Comic-Con. The last part is the one I find most interesting. If you think about it, Sauron is the same kind of being as Gandalf, Mairon the Admirable before he was the Abhorred, a craftsman who loved order and wasn't born evil. And Tolkien even says he repented once, if only out of fear. I end with the Many Faces video and one small detail in the trailer, his hand with the One Ring and all five fingers. For now. I don't know yet how much of his road season three will show, but it's no coincidence that it starts with a face. Written sources on screen: The Letters of J.R.R.
