Obsession beats discipline, and not as a slogan. In 2016 twenty-three labs tested the willpower-as-fuel theory and measured an effect of zero.
In 2016, twenty-three laboratories ran a preregistered replication of ego depletion — the theory that self-control is a tank that empties through the day. Over two thousand participants. Almost every team predicted a real effect. It came back at 0.04, with confidence intervals crossing zero.
So whatever carries people through years of hard work isn't a willpower reserve, because there isn't one. It's wanting to be there.
And wanting can be built. Interest research describes four stages, and the first is always triggered from outside. Curiosity is a response to a specific gap in what you already half know, not a mood that arrives.
Inside this breakdown:
→ Curiosity Needs a Gap — why you can't be curious about a subject, only a question
→ The Trigger Comes From Outside — the four stages, and why caring is stage three
→ Make It Answer Faster — why people finish games and abandon books
→ The reason you were never short on discipline
