The Pan Borneo Highway Sarawak (part of the larger Asian Highway Route AH150) is the most significant infrastructure project in East Malaysia’s history.
It is transforming the state by replacing old, single-lane trunk roads with a massive, modern four-lane dual carriageway stretching across the entire length of Sarawak.
A complete overview of the megaproject covers its current status, structure, and impact:
1. Current Completion Status (As of late 2026)
• Phase 1 Progress: The main 786-kilometer stretch spanning from Telok Melano (at the southwestern tip) all the way to Miri (in the north) is effectively complete. Officially, Phase 1 sits at 99.98% physical completion.
• The Final Packages: Ten out of the eleven main work packages are entirely open. The final minor delays pushing full delivery into 2026 stem from complex utility and pipeline relocations in areas like Sibuti and final touches in the Jakar section near Sarikei.
• Toll-Free: Unlike the Peninsular North-South Expressway (PLUS), the Pan Borneo Highway is entirely toll-free for all road users.
2. Upgrades and Connectivity Features
The highway acts as a socio-economic lifeline by modernizing regional travel:
• Structural Layout: It updates the rugged interior route into a high-capacity, JKR R5 standard highway. It features 119 bridges, 25 multi-level interchanges, and dozens of pedestrian bridges and modern bus shelters.
• New Amenities: The project features purpose-built Rest & Rawat (R&R) stops to accommodate long-distance travelers. For example, the R&R Jelukong Pan Borneo near Engkilili and new rest options in Lachau (Sri Aman) have officially opened, providing food courts and facilities for commuters.
• Speed Limits: The standard engineered speed limit across the completed Sarawak highway modules is designated at 90 km/h.
3. Future Extension Projects
With Phase 1 nearing its finish line, focus has officially shifted to the remaining sections designed to fully bypass Brunei checkpoint bottlenecks:
• Sarawak-Sabah Link Road (SSLR) & Trans Borneo Highway: These projects will seamlessly link Miri to Limbang and Lawas, connecting straight through to Sabah. The SSLR Phase 1 is targetting its final wrap-up by the end of 2026, while the Trans Borneo Highway's Miri section has officially had its contracts issued.
4. Travel Impact
For locals and tourists alike, it has slashed driving times drastically. A road trip from Kuching to Miri, which historically took upwards of 14 to 16 hours over precarious pothole-ridden roads, is now a much smoother, safer, and faster drive, directly accelerating regional tourism, business distribution, and local logistics.
