Bicycling Iowa's Summerset Trail, Carlisle to Indianola (April 15, 2024) Tulips and Warmth

We headed south for a 12-day road trip to enjoy some seasonably warm spring weather and ride some new bike trails. Our fourth day of riding was on the Summerset Trail which is to the southeast of Des Moines. It is an 11-mile trail on an old spur of the Rock Island train line. This is a delightful trail that was in good condition. We went beyond the southern end of the trail to do a lap around Simpson College and also did a lap around Banner Lakes at Summerset State Park, both are recommended. Going south on the trail there is a decent 3 mile climb from the Middle River to Indianola. Des Moines is a wonderful area to bicycle ride and it is one to add to your list of bicycling destinations.
