Jinjer - Pisces | First Listen | She Can Do THAT?!

This was a request from @Stanley-r6e, who specifically asked for a blind reaction to Jinjer's "Pisces" live session. I'll start by saying this: the band is extremely talented. Musically, there was a lot to appreciate here. The bass player in particular caught my attention. He had a really unique playing style and was doing some things that you don't see every day. There were moments where he appeared to be tapping notes and harmonics, creating textures that added a lot to the song. The drummer was also impressive. One thing I noticed right away was his setup. For a heavy band, his kit was a little unusual. He wasn't using mounted toms, just floor toms, and he appeared to be playing open-handed. That's where a right-handed drummer plays the hi-hat and other patterns with the left hand instead of crossing over with the right. It's not something you see every day, and it stood out to me immediately. The vocalist also deserves a lot of credit. When she was singing cleanly, I thought she had a very good voice. The verses showcased a melodic and expressive vocal style that I genuinely enjoyed. The challenge for me came when the harsh vocals kicked in. I know a lot of metal fans love that style, whether you call it growling, harsh vocals, or death metal vocals, but it's simply not something I've ever connected with personally. Every time the song shifted into that vocal approach, it pulled me out of the experience. That's not a criticism of the singer's ability. In fact, the contrast between the clean vocals and the harsh vocals is obviously what makes this song so famous. It's just a matter of personal taste. The band was excellent, the musicianship was excellent, and I can absolutely understand why so many people love this song. For me, though, the vocals are the dividing line. When she was singing, I was fully on board. When the harsh vocals arrived, it became much harder for me to enjoy. At the end of the day, I'd give the musicians in the band very high marks. They're clearly outstanding players. The song itself was well performed, and I understand why it has become such a popular reaction song. It just comes down to a style of vocals that doesn't really fit my personal tastes. Excellent musicianship. Very talented band.
