What makes Groningen one of the world’s leading cycling cities?
In this short-form documentary for “The Power of Cycling,” the City of Groningen shows how long-term investment in cycling infrastructure has helped make everyday cycling safe, convenient and part of the city’s identity.
Nearly half of all trips in the municipality are made by bike. From connected cycling routes between surrounding towns and the city centre to wider bicycle paths, safer crossings and cycling streets, Groningen has created the conditions for people to choose cycling in daily life.
The film follows a commute into the city centre, showing how cycling can bring freedom, joy and connection to everyday journeys. It also explores how Groningen’s all-green traffic lights for cyclists help people cross safely, how more than 312 km of cycling routes support movement across the municipality and why secure, dry and supervised bike parking is essential for a growing cycling city.
For Groningen, cycling is not only a mode of transport. It is part of what makes the city vibrant, liveable and welcoming for residents, students and visitors.
Part of “The Power of Cycling,” a digital series from the European Cyclists’ Federation and Content With Purpose, this film shows how cycling infrastructure can improve quality of life and help cities become healthier, more accessible and more enjoyable.
