Priti: (25 years old, distressed) (To herself) Goodness, there’s so much dust everywhere! Diwali cleaning is no easy task—it takes a lot of hard work and a great deal of time.
Narrator: Priti was busy with the Diwali cleaning at home. She had just finished clearing away all the cobwebs and was meticulously cleaning every single item. Exhausted from all the work, she headed to her room to freshen up. After bathing and changing into fresh clothes, she returned.
Priti: (25 years old, composed) (To herself) Let me rest for a while; there’s no one else home right now anyway. Narrator: All the family members were out, and Shanti had gone to a neighbor’s house.
Sheela: (55, casual tone) So, how are the Diwali cleaning and preparations coming along at everyone’s place?
Shanti: (55, casual tone) Everything is going great at my house! My daughter-in-law has already taken care of all the preparations. With Diwali just around the corner, I’m sure all the cleaning will be wrapped up this week. What about you, Sarla—how much work have you managed to get done?
Sarla: (50, casual tone) Well, both of you have daughters-in-law to help with the chores! I, on the other hand, have to do everything all by myself. You can imagine how much work that entails. As one gets older, one just doesn’t have the same energy as before. You two are the lucky ones—ever since your daughters-in-law arrived, you don’t have to shoulder all the work yourselves.
Shanti: (55, casual tone) Why don’t you get your son married, then? Once a daughter-in-law joins your household, you won’t have to worry about all this anymore!
Sarla: (50, casual tone) Not yet! My son has flatly refused to get married; he has no interest in it right now. He’s only just started his job, and he’s still quite young. Oh well, we’ll see about his marriage sometime later.
Narrator: As the neighbors chatted, Priti received a phone call from one of her friends.
Neha: (25, casual tone) (On the phone) Hey Priti, how are things? You’ve been quite MIA (missing in action) lately!
Priti: (25, casual tone) (On the phone) Well, what could things possibly be like after getting married? I’ve never worked this hard in my life—not even before I got married! And now, after marriage, there’s just so much to do. Plus, with Diwali around the corner, you can imagine how much extra work that brings. That’s exactly why I haven’t had a moment to spare.
Neha: (25, matter-of-factly) (On the phone) Oh, I totally get it! This is your first Diwali at your in-laws', right? For me, it’s the second. Last year, I was completely exhausted from all the work I had to do during Diwali.
Priti: (25, surprised) (On the phone) Wait, what? You actually worked on the day of Diwali itself? No way! I’m not doing a single bit of work on Diwali. I mean, maybe some chores in the morning, sure—but after that, we’re heading to my aunt-in-law’s place for a meal, and then we’re going out to a hotel for dinner. So, I won’t really have much to do on the day of Diwali. In a way, I’ll actually get a day off!
Neha: (25, matter-of-factly) (On the phone) That’s fantastic! At least you’ll get a break on Diwali. It’s usually so hard for a daughter-in-law to get any time off—everyone else gets a day off on Sundays, but not her. And on festivals, while everyone else gets a holiday, she never does. She deserves a day off too, doesn't she?
Priti: (25, matter-of-factly) (On the phone) Exactly! You should talk to your mother-in-law about this, too. After all, we’ll be getting all dressed up for Diwali—we need time to take photos and shoot some videos! "We just want to enjoy Diwali and burst some firecrackers!"
Neha: (25 years old, typical) (On the phone) "Yeah, absolutely! Before I got married, I used to have time to make videos, but now—after marriage—I don’t get any time at all. Let’s see what happens this time, though."
Narrator: In the evening, Nidhi returns from college, and Shanti also arrives. Afterward, Priti prepares tea and snacks for everyone.
Priti: (25 years old, typical) (To herself) "I just need to finish cleaning the kitchen tomorrow; after that, I can gradually start with the decorations."
