They have never seen Tibet, yet the stories of their parents’ journey from Lhasa to Kashmir continue to shape their identity and connection to their roots.
Recently, we visited members of the Lhasa Khache (Tibetan Muslim) community in Srinagar, Kashmir, and spoke with Ahmad Kamal Zareif, a Tibetan Muslim restaurateur who has served Tibetan food in the city for over 50 years, and community leader Faizullah Malik.
They share the history of their community, the importance of preserving the Tibetan language and cultural heritage for future generations, and the support they receive from the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA). They also call for greater cooperation and closer ties between their community and the CTA to keep their shared heritage alive.
