Why do you care so much what someone thinks of you, especially when you’re not even sure what they actually think?
If someone doesn’t respond to you, seems warmer with someone else, leaves you out, or gives you the feeling they might not like you… how quickly do you start wondering what you did wrong?
In this episode of *Let’s Make Sense of It*, we’re looking at why someone else’s behaviour can affect how we feel about ourselves — and the difference between what actually happened, what we think it means, and what we make that mean about us.
We’ll talk about:
• Why we’re wired to care about belonging
• How rejection sensitivity can make us more alert to signs we might be rejected
• Why not knowing what someone thinks can be so uncomfortable
• How we can turn an uncertain situation into a painful explanation that feels like fact
• Why being liked can become tied to our sense of self-worth
• What happens when we compare how someone treats us with how they treat someone else
• The “separation of tasks” idea from The Courage to Be Disliked
• How to use the SENSE framework to separate what happened from what we decided it meant
I also share a real moment from a group chat that made me realize how quickly I can go from:
“They didn’t respond to me.”
to:
“Maybe they don’t like me.”
to:
“Is there something wrong with me?”
Those are three different things.
What happened.
What I think it means.
What I make that mean about me.
And even if I eventually find out someone really doesn’t like me, that still doesn’t tell me who I am.
Because maybe the goal isn’t to stop caring what people think.
Maybe it’s learning how to care without letting their opinion, or what we think their opinion is, decide how we see ourselves.
