Cachargi Meitei Khungang ÀSHRALABUK

Ashra Labuk is a small but compact Manipuri village located approximately one kilometre south-west of Binnakandi Ghat Bazar in Cachar district, Assam. The village name comprises two elements: Ashra, denoting a particular variety of paddy (the term itself not being Manipuri), and Labuk, a Manipuri word meaning paddy field. Historically, the Manipuri settlers of this locality cultivated the Ashra variety of paddy extensively in their fields, and the settlement gradually came to be identified by this name. At present, Ashra Labuk comprises about sixty Manipuri households.
