Scratching the Surface with Jinete Barranquilla Colombia Cultura Picó Caribe Verbena Caribe Bacano

(English below) Conocí a Jinete   / jinete.dj   en una de mis primeras visitas a Jirón Quilca en Centro Lima. Estaba muy interesado en mi tocadiscos portátil y empezamos a charlar. Resulta que era de Barranquilla y le estaba contando sobre unos amigos que vivían en la costa caribeña de Colombia y que esperaba llegar allí más adelante en el viaje para llegar al Carnaval. Seguimos en contacto y la invitamos a poner algunos discos en un restaurante de sushi en Miraflores donde él era residente la semana siguiente. Avanzando 4 meses, era la última semana de enero y acababa de reservar mis vuelos de Bolivia a Barranquilla contándole a Jinete mis planes, él ya estaba en el autobús desde Lima para estar allí en la festividad. Era muy escasa la posibilidad de alojamiento y sin dudarlo me dijo que podía quedarme en su casa con su familia, qué salvavidas. Pasaría dos semanas y media en el sofá de la casa familiar de su familia en Villa San Pedro 3, un pequeño barrio popular en el sur de la ciudad. Vivir el Carnaval de mi nuevo barrio es algo que nunca olvidaré. Ser adoptado por mi familia de Barranquilla, la música que retumbaba en cada rincón y la alegría cuando todos te saludaban, incluso siendo ya la tercera o quinta vez que os veíais ese día. En nuestra charla hablamos sobre Barranquilla y la importancia de la música para la gente, qué influye en los sonidos de la cultura picó de Barranquilla como puerta de entrada a Colombia desde el Caribe. He was very interested in my portable record player and we got chatting. It turns out he was from Barranquilla and i was telling him about some friends that lived on the Caribbean coast of Colombia and that i was hoping to get there later on in the trip to get to Carnaval. We kept in touch and invited to play some records at a Sushi place in Miraflores he was a resident at the following week. Fast forward 4 months, it was the last week of January and had just booked my flights from Bolivia to Barranquilla telling Jinete my plans, he was already on the bus from Lima to be there for the festivities. It was slim pickings for accommodation and without hesitation he told me i could stay at his place with his family, what a life saver. I would go on to spend 2 and a half weeks on the couch of his family home in Villa San Pedro 3, a small working-class neighborhood in the south of the city. Experiencing Carnaval from mi nuevo barrio is something i will never forget. Being adopted by my Barranquilla family, to the music that boomed from every corner and the joy as everyone greeted you with, even it was already the 3rd or 5th time you had seen each other that day. In our chat we talk about Barranquilla and the importance of music to the people, what influences the sounds of Barranquilla's Picó culture as the gateway to Colombia from the Caribbean.
