Achieving Success for Midget AAA – Calgary Buffalo Hockey Association

Sidney Crosby was once said "In this jersey, I promise to play for the logo on the front, not the name on the back." It's a quote also fitting of the philosophy of the Calgary Buffalo Hockey Association. It's an organization that not only fosters great hockey skills, but also moulds individuals who realize the importance of teamwork, education and community spirit. For more than 75 years, the association has produced several NHL all-stars, including Garry Unger, Dany Heatley and Jordan Eberle. The CBHA has also been the training ground for former Alberta Premier Peter Lougheed, ATCO and Spruce Meadows founder Ron Southern, and former City of Calgary councilor Don Hartman. Each one of these esteemed alumni realized that hockey was a springboard into personal success, whether it be in professional hockey, business or politics. The 2016/2017 roster of the Midget AAA Buffaloes look to have a bright future ahead of them. The team finished first in their division, overcoming a grueling game schedule, and a full school course load. Under the leadership of head coach Claude Vilgrain, the players learned the value of teamwork in achieving success. They also realized that both the team and the association place a high value on education. On the top of that, players are expected to represent the Calgary Buffalo Hockey Association to the highest standard possible within the community. As tyke and novice players, they watched the Buffaloes come off the ice and wished they could be elite level players. Now their dream has come true. But that dream doesn't come without several sacrifices. It's a long and grueling season, with countless hours spent on the ice for both games and practices. Doing schoolwork means hitting the books at the rink before and after games, or even on the buses while travelling for out-of-town games. But the friendships that are forged during the season make the personal challenges all the more rewarding. As we show in our HockeyXtra exclusive, the valuable lessons these players learn both on an off the ice will stay with them long after their playing days are completed.
