In the Okavango Delta the flood arrives in the dry winter, and an old buffalo bull called Kago has to find his way through it. A herd that votes before it moves, a flood that breaks the plains into islands, lions that hunt by day and swim between the islands, a night attack in the dry grass, and a long road back to the edge of the herd. Kago and Tiro are composite characters. Their story is built from documented African buffalo and lion behaviour in the Okavango Delta, not from the life of one animal. The facts come from published research: herd voting (Prins, 1996); male lions taking buffalo more often than females in Kruger (Funston et al., 1998); oxpeckers keeping wounds open (Weeks, 1999/2000); buffalo status on the IUCN Red List: Near Threatened, about 400,000 mature individuals (2019 assessment). Footage: licensed stock video (Canva Pro). No AI-generated footage.
