The House at Mile 43 is the fictional second album by Cole Barrett, imagined as a forgotten southern blues rock record released in 1975. After the strange fragments of Dust & Echoes, Barrett's journey takes him somewhere less familiar: an isolated house beyond a forgotten stretch of county road, where ordinary places begin to carry details that don't quite belong. Across four songs, the album moves through a Sunday gathering where nobody speaks plainly, a radio transmission that seems to know who is listening, an old house marked only by a number, and a man who continues to keep keys for doors that no longer exist. Rather than explaining what these events mean, The House at Mile 43 leaves the listener with fragments, photographs, names, rooms, voices and objects that seem harmless until they are placed beside one another. The result is a strange little world that feels half remembered, as though someone found an old notebook in the back of a roadside motel and decided to turn its pages into songs.
