The final episode of the introductory series about VectorFall, the supercomputing platform I built on inexpensive NVIDIA GPUs. Everything here runs on a Quadro K420 that costs about $15, and VectorFall can schedule work across several of them.
Episodes 1–4 covered the Text Engine and its language model, the Photo and Sound Labs, the Data Desk and the Planner, and the simulation, particle and reservoir labs. Today: the machine itself, the Python console, and the classic simulations.
▸ The Machine view: every CUDA core, GPU load, GFLOP/s and temperature, live. A quick benchmark puts the card at 1,016 Cray-1s, for $15
▸ Tuning knobs (threads, registers per thread) if you want them, sensible defaults if you don't
▸ The model library: every VectorFall capability as a procedure you can call over MCP or the API
▸ A Python console that runs on the card: CuPy bindings plus pre-built modules
· Mean and median of 10 million numbers in 102 ms
· A Julia set, rendered from code
· Edge detection on a photo of a Cray
· Big matrix multiplication, CPU vs GPU
· FFT: breaking a chord into its frequencies
▸ Random walks: half a million walkers exploring a search space, the toy version of searching for an optimal wing design
▸ Monte Carlo π, the Ising magnet, a Mandelbrot auto-zoom
▸ N-body gravity: galaxy-formation behaviour emerging on a $15 GPU, the kind of thing supercomputers were built for
▸ Conway's Game of Life and cellular automata (universal computers from a few simple rules), plus reaction-diffusion
Why it matters: we mostly use computers to communicate, and lately to chat with AI models. There's far more to uncover in democratizing computation, and a cheap graphics card anyone can afford, wired into your own workflow, is a great place to start.
VectorFall isn't released yet. There's still work to do, but I hope to make it available soon.
