What actually expands when scientists say the universe is expanding?
Are galaxies simply flying through space like fragments from an explosion?
Is the universe expanding into something outside itself?
Or is space itself part of what's changing?
The answer is much stranger than it first appears.
On the largest cosmic scales, distant galaxies can become farther apart because the geometry that determines distances through space evolves over time.
In this episode of First Principles, we explore what cosmic expansion really means, why the universe doesn't need a central point of expansion, and why the familiar balloon analogy is useful — but also limited.
We'll also discover why your body, Earth and the Solar System don't simply expand along with the universe, how cosmological redshift stretches the wavelength of light, and how sufficiently distant galaxies can recede from us at an effective rate greater than the speed of light without locally breaking Einstein's speed limit.
The universe isn't simply exploding outward into a pre-existing empty space.
Cosmic expansion describes how distances between widely separated regions change over time.
So what is actually expanding?
Space itself is part of the story.
