Why I Unplug Every Charger Before Bed (A Firefighter's Secret Rule)
A phone on the charger, a blanket on the bed, a heater humming because the room was cold. If a bedroom fire started, the odds are it started at what you plugged in and where you set it down — not the wiring in the walls. A retired fire investigator walked me through the specific things he found at the start of roughly three thousand of those fires, and the cheapest ones were the ones nobody thought about.
I built a room-by-room guide for the rest of this — it covers what gets plugged in, where it sits, and what the connection behind it is doing, with every fix priced and ordered worst first. Link below.
What's covered:
How a phone charger fails under a pillow: a sweet, sharp smell like hot plastic, a faint brown ring on the fabric, and a mattress crater with a raised lip
What to look for on a power strip tucked behind the couch, and why daisy-chaining strips moves the heat into the wall outlet
Signs an extension cord under the rug is cooking, including a warm floor in a spot where nothing is plugged in
Lithium battery failure: a swollen cell as the loudest warning, and why smothering it does not work
Loose terminal joints behind the outlet plate, where the deepest damage in the house was found — inside a box the size of a deck of cards
Space heater and electric blanket load on a fifteen-amp bedroom circuit, and why the heater was usually fine
The ten-second habit that costs nothing: unplug the heater and blanket before sleep, and take the phone off the mattress
This is general home safety, not electrical advice for a specific house. When something is warm, smells hot, or looks scorched, the safe move is the breaker for that circuit, off, and a licensed electrician on the phone.
