Same Houseplant. Same Care. So Why Is One of Them Rubbish? 🤯🌿

Have you ever had a houseplant that just seems rubbish no matter what you do? 🌿 You give it the right light, watering, humidity and growing medium. Your other plants are thriving. But this ONE plant has struggled since the day you bought it. Sometimes, you might genuinely have bought a bum specimen. In this video, I'm looking at something we don't talk about enough in the houseplant community: two plants of exactly the same species or cultivar don't necessarily start off equally healthy. One might have a strong, established root system and plenty of vigour. Another could have weak roots, previous stress, a difficult propagation history or damage that happened months before you ever brought it home. The problem is that when we buy a houseplant, we're entering halfway through its story. I'll show you examples from my own tropical houseplant collection, including plants that have struggled for YEARS despite receiving comparable care to other specimens that have absolutely thrived. We'll talk about poor root systems, propagation and divisions, tissue culture plants, transport and retail stress, previous pest problems, individual plant vigour and why damage that happened before you bought a plant can sometimes appear much later. I'll also show you what I now look for when buying houseplants to reduce the chances of bringing home a poor specimen, including roots, active growth, previous damage and overall vigour. And importantly, can you actually turn a dud houseplant around? Sometimes, yes. A stronger root system, stable conditions and a bit of patience can completely change a struggling plant. In some cases, starting again with a healthy cutting, node, division or corm might even give you a better plant. But there's an important catch. If you've bought five of the same plant and killed all five in exactly the same way... we might need to have a different conversation. 😂 One struggling specimen doesn't necessarily mean you can't grow that species.
