Sunrise Salutations and Sunset Valedictories is a 15-minute reflection film celebrating four site-specific ritual performances held at Oakland's historic 16th Street Station and The People's House in September and October 2026. Created from photographs and videos documented by participating artists, organizers, and community members, with creative direction and editing by Jasper Love and Maiamama, the film captures moments of poetry, storytelling, drumming, dance, visual art, collective healing, and community remembrance. The project brought together Black Arts Movement Business District Community Development Corporation (BAMBD, CDC), Lower Bottom Playaz (ayodele nzinga), Anti Police-Terror Project (Cat Brooks), EastSide Arts Alliance (Elena Serrano), Grown Women Dance (Tonya Amos), LPB Dance (Jemeelah Lane), Afro Urban Society (Kunukai), Calling Up Justice (Claudia Alick), and Distributed Sound Collective. Through community testimonials, artistic performances, and rituals of grief and celebration, the film reflects on Oakland's changing neighborhoods, cultural memory, displacement, and the power of gathering together. Calling Up Justice's digital placemaking practice extends these temporary public performances into a growing multimedia archive, preserving community stories and creating new ways to experience the artwork beyond the original events. The project continues into 2027.
