Ruth 1:1-5 | What If These Aren’t Their Real Names?

Why did a family leave the “house of bread” to find food, and what did that choice cost them? Ruth 1:1-5. Bethlehem means “house of bread,” yet Elimelech’s family leaves it to find food in Moab. In Ruth 1:1-5, we look at the names of the characters (Naomi, Mahlon, Chilion) and ask whether they’re the names these people were born with or labels the storyteller gave them in hindsight. We also look at the cost of Elimelech’s decision, because every choice we make closes the door on another. What did this family give up when they walked away from Bethlehem?
