In his 50th year, Bill Pinkney had a strange mid-life crisis. He'd already been an executive with Revlon, an elevator mechanic, a professional limbo dancer, a make-up artist, an x-ray technician, and the first Black commodore of a yacht club along Chicago's lakefront. Bill decided to do something historic. Though beset by hearing loss and vertigo, he decided to sail alone around the globe, riding the wind solo for 27,000 nautical miles. And he chose to do it the hard way, navigating all five of the southernmost capes, including Cape Horn. What was meant to inspire his grandchildren engaged thousands of school kids as they followed his epic journey.
Bill passed in 2023 at the age of 87 but his impact has lived on to inspire another generation. Join us with his wife at the time, Ina Pinkney, and his producer, Lorie Conway, to watch his movie and talk about this remarkable man.
