After a busy week, a woman enjoys a relaxed Friday evening with her coworkers at a hotpot restaurant. Over dinner, they talk about work, share their weekend plans, and get to know one another better.
Below is an English translation of the story for reference only.
On Friday afternoon, I finished what I was working on and checked the time. I could leave work in half an hour.
Work had been busy all week, and I had gotten home late every day.
The thought of having hotpot with my coworkers that evening lifted my spirits right away.
Several of us often worked together, but we rarely saw one another outside work.
Even at lunchtime, we usually ate at different times. Last week, we decided to find an evening when we wouldn’t have to rush so we could sit down and have a meal together.
We chose Friday in the end because we wouldn’t have to get up early the next day.
After work, I tidied my desk, picked up my things, and waited for my coworkers to finish.
The hotpot restaurant wasn’t far from the office—about a fifteen-minute walk. It was a little cold outside, and the wind blew against my face, so I zipped up my coat.
My coworkers and I talked and laughed along the way. Before long, we arrived at the restaurant.
When we got there, two coworkers were already seated. There were menus and a few glasses of water on the table.
A little later, everyone had arrived. We ordered two kinds of broth: one mild and one slightly spicy.
Some people liked spicy food, while others couldn’t eat it. This way, everyone could enjoy the meal.
We also ordered beef, lamb, chicken, fish, tofu, leafy greens, kelp, and a few side dishes.
Lamb and shiitake mushrooms are my favorites, so I put them a little closer to my seat.
As the broth slowly heated up, everyone added ingredients to the pot and waited for them to cook.
The restaurant was crowded and a little noisy, but sitting together made us feel relaxed.
The first plate of beef was gone quickly. I picked up a piece of tofu and waited until it wasn’t so hot before putting it in my mouth.
I usually eat dinner quickly because I have other things to do when I get home.
But that evening, I didn’t check the time or hurry to finish eating. I chatted with my coworkers and had a lot of fun.
During dinner, we talked about what we had done that week. Some things at work hadn’t been easy, but we had worked together and completed them in the end.
When I’m busy, I usually focus only on what I’m doing. It was only while we sat and talked at the hotpot restaurant that I realized everyone had their own difficulties.
Later, we moved on from work. One coworker liked cooking at home on weekends, while another was planning to see a movie.
I told them that I had recently started learning to knit a sweater. After following online lessons for a month, I was finally making a little progress.
I said I would wear it for them to see when it was finished, and everyone laughed even more.
When we had eaten most of the food in the pot, we added noodles. They soaked up the flavor of the broth and tasted delicious.
It was still cold outside, but the restaurant was warm. I took a sip of water, looked at the people around the table, and felt that the evening had gone by quickly.
After dinner, we looked at the bill together, and each of us paid our own share.
There were fewer people on the street when we left. I walked to the subway station with a coworker who lived in the same direction, then took the train home.
I was a little tired on the way home, but I felt happy.
Nothing special had happened at our hotpot dinner. We had simply eaten, chatted, and laughed together. But after that evening, I felt we understood one another better.
When we returned to the office the following week, I thought working together would feel more natural, too.
