Does an AI’s “80% confident” label mean that eight out of ten comparable answers will be right? This original whiteboard lesson explains calibration: comparing confidence scores with independently checked outcomes. Learn how to read a reliability diagram, why calibration is different from accuracy and useful ranking, how to keep a final test separate from tuning, and why a review cutoff needs its own evaluation. Both numerical groups shown are hypothetical teaching examples. We did not test a deployed model or measure any vendor’s performance. Ten invented outcomes illustrate the definition, not proof of reliability. A calibrated score does not guarantee an individual answer.
