Almost every ancient writing system is a puzzle now. Egyptian hieroglyphs, Mesopotamian cuneiform — the inscriptions are still there, but the people who could read them are gone. Chinese characters are about 3,000 years old, and they are still on your screen right now.
This episode follows one writing system through every world it had to survive in: divination bones in the Shang court, bronze vessels, bamboo slips, silk, paper, woodblock printing, the Qin unification of 221 BC, modern schools — and finally the computer.
The answer turns out not to be about how well a script was preserved. A script survives when each generation still finds a reason to use it.
