A thermometer can tell you you're running 103. It can't tell you whether it's the flu or your body fighting off something that would have taken you out. Pressure works the same way. It can measure the weight, but it can't tell you where it came from, what it's for, how long it lasts, or what it's producing in you. And when a test comes around again, it isn't always bad news. Sometimes it's remedial. Sometimes it's recertification. Sometimes it's promotion. If the testing stopped, that wouldn't mean you passed. It might mean you're not carrying anything. You don't have to win by never having the thought. You win when the trip down gets shorter. Ask again. He doesn't scold you for asking.
