I have a white voice. And if you're Black, you probably do too. At a party, someone told me their 17-year-old white cousin talks like he grew up on my block. Then they asked me why I don't. So I spent weeks digging into why so many of us switch voices at work, with landlords, with cops, in interviews. I found three reasons. The third one is the one nobody says out loud. This is about code switching, where our real voice comes from, who decided what "professional" sounds like, what it costs us, and how to switch on purpose instead of out of fear.
