Discover the culture and history of the Avokaya people of South Sudan. Historically, the Avokaya people originate from areas such as Maridi town, Mambe, Bahr-Olo, and Amaki. Today, they can also be found in Tore Payam, Yei town, Bangolo Payam in Mundri West, and in other parts of South Sudan. The Avokaya are known for their bravery and unity. Together with the Moru people, they resisted and helped stop the invasion of King Gbudwe of the Azande into their territory. This history reflects their strength and deep cultural roots. Culturally the Avokaya are famous for their traditional dance called Mamburuku and their strong spirit of social connection with other communities. Many Avokaya people are multilingual, speaking Avokaya as well as Pa-Zande, Moru, and Baka languages. Their traditional food includes Pirinda served with Nyasa (made from sorghum, millet, or cassava flour). They also enjoy wild fruits like Omi and Kaniki, along with yams.
