What is happening inside Jamia Millia Islamia University? Why are students protesting, and why has the campus witnessed heavy security deployment?
In this exclusive ground report for Molitics, our journalist Harish Jhah brings you voices from the ground at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, where students have been protesting since October 12, 2026, demanding the restoration of their elected students' union.
Our report captures the situation outside the university gates, where students are seen speaking to the media through iron grills and barricades. Students allege that heavy deployment of police and paramilitary personnel, restricted campus access and the closure of gates have made it difficult for them to raise their concerns publicly.
Students also claim that they are facing difficulties accessing essential supplies, including food and drinking water. They describe the atmosphere as restrictive and say their concerns are not being adequately addressed.
The university's decision to shift classes online has added another dimension to the ongoing dispute. The administration has cited student safety and security amid escalating tensions.
Why are Jamia students protesting?
The central demand is the restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students' Union (JMISU), which has remained dissolved since 2006. Students are demanding a democratically elected student body that can represent their concerns, raise campus issues and give them a formal voice in university affairs.
The controversy also raises broader questions about student democracy, freedom of expression, campus security and the right to peaceful protest.
As students point to the participation of political leaders in student politics, they ask why university students should not have the same opportunity to elect their representatives.
Watch this Molitics ground report to hear directly from the students and understand the situation beyond headlines.
