Doberman history begins with a night watchman who was also his town's dog catcher. So who was he, and how different is the dog he started from the Doberman you see today?
In the small German town of Apolda, Louis Dobermann had access to every stray dog in town, and he wanted sharp, alert guard dogs. His earliest known dog was a female called Schnuppe. Dobermann died in 1894. In 1899 a liqueur maker, Otto Göller, founded the first club, named the breed after him and wrote its first standard. What went into the mix? Nobody wrote it down. The American Kennel Club registered its first Doberman Pinschers in 1908, Marine Corps Dobermans made the breed famous in the Pacific war, and in 2026 a Doberman named Penny won Best in Show at the 150th Westminster show. So, same dog? By the end you'll see what changed, and what carried through.
