Fighting across Masisi, Walikale, and Walungu: two villages change hands as renewed clashes disrupt travel and force civilians to flee in eastern DR Congo. In this Rwanda Updates report, we explain the developments reported on 5 November 2026, connecting the fighting in North Kivu with renewed confrontations in South Kivu. According to Radio Okapi, FARDC troops supported by Wazalendo fighters regained control of Mahanga and Kilongo following clashes with FRN combatants. Local sources reported that FRN fighters withdrew toward Kasopo. Further fighting was reported at Kibati in Walikale, without a conclusive account of the outcome. In Walungu, reporting attributed to ACTUALITE.CD describes clashes around the Lutunkulu–Nzibira axis, including surrounding villages and hills. Residents and travellers reported being trapped by gunfire, highlighting the growing risks to civilian movement and access to essential services. We also examine Lawrence Kanyuka’s statement alleging attacks on Nyamarhege, Lulaba, Chulwe, and Kasika. His claims concerning combat drones, fighter aircraft, heavy artillery, and attacks on populated areas are presented as FRN’s account. His description of FRN operations as protecting civilians is likewise attributed to the movement. This report follows the chronology, distinguishes reported territorial changes from ongoing clashes, and explains the consequences for communities caught between the opposing forces. No comprehensive casualty figures were available in the information covered. SOURCES: Radio Okapi reporting, ACTUALITE.CD reporting, and Lawrence Kanyuka’s statement dated 5 November 2026.
