Psalm 69 — He Hears Me in the Hollow “For יהוה hears the poor, And He shall not despise His captives.” — Psalm 69:33, TS2009 “He Hears Me in the Hollow” is an Appalachian Mountain Lament inspired by Psalm 69—a prayer from the lowest place, where the waters are rising, the voice is growing weak and firm ground seems far away. David speaks honestly about rejection, false accusations and a broken heart. Yet he also allows Yahweh to examine his own foolishness. Other people’s wrongdoing does not remove our responsibility for our walk. We cannot silence every rumor. We cannot change another person’s heart. We cannot command the river or stop the rain. But we can speak truth, confess our wrongs, repair what we have damaged and continue walking according to Yahweh’s Torah. “I’ll keep the Torah near me Like a lantern on the trail. I’ll work out my deliverance When my hands and courage fail.” Yahweh will do for us what we cannot do for ourselves. Our responsibility is to take the next faithful step placed before us. Psalm 69 also reminds us not to waste the moment we have been given. We do not know how many mornings remain beyond the ridge. Say what needs to be said, love those beside you and make right what remains within your hands. The psalm begins with a man drowning in sorrow but ends with praise. His feet have not yet reached level ground, but he knows that Yahweh hears the needy and does not forget those who are suffering.
