In Madhya Pradesh’s Balaghat district, in the Baihar region, live the Baiga Adivasis—one of India’s Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs). Many Baiga communities still live in remote, forested areas that are breathtakingly beautiful, but every year these villages face a devastating health crisis. Children are particularly vulnerable to diseases such as malaria and dysentery. This year alone, at least 20 children have reportedly died in the region, raising serious questions about healthcare, sanitation and government intervention in these remote tribal communities. The tragedy has, however, brought an important response. Local journalists and the opposition Congress party have strongly raised the issue, increasing pressure on the government and its machinery to act. This is the story of the Baiga children of Baihar—and a reminder of how difficult access to basic healthcare remains for some of India’s most vulnerable tribal communities.
