In August 2026, a team at MIT published a paper in Nature describing something that had never been directly observed before — a black hole wrapped inside a dense hydrogen cocoon the size of our solar system, shining 100 billion times more brightly than any star, existing just 660 million years after the Big Bang. They called it a black hole star.
This video covers the full story: what JWST found, why no existing category could explain it, what the Balmer break of 7.7 actually means, how this object grows its central black hole faster than physics normally allows, and why the black hole at the center of our own galaxy may have passed through this same phase before the Milky Way existed.
