- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Hasselt was founded in the seventh century along the Helbeek River and grew into an important regional trading center. In 1232, the town was granted city rights by Count Arnold IV of Loon. After its incorporation into the Prince-Bishopric of Liège, Hasselt was considered one of the “Good Cities” of the county. Over the following centuries, the city weathered various sieges and epidemics but maintained its economic standing. In the nineteenth century, the renowned jenever industry flourished, giving the city its historic reputation for craftsmanship. Today, this former count’s town is the lively and welcoming capital of the Belgian province of Limburg.
