I chose these destinations because they offer a combination of relatively straightforward entry for U.S. travelers, direct flight options from major U.S. cities, established tourism infrastructure, English widely used in tourist areas, plenty of solo-friendly activities, and a range of price points. But there's another reason I chose them: They're manageable. I don't think your first solo trip needs to be a two-week, three-country adventure halfway around the world. When you're traveling alone for the first time, I think it's helpful to choose somewhere relatively easy to reach, easy enough to navigate, and close enough that you can get home fairly quickly if you decide solo travel isn't for you... or if something unexpected happens.
